This is a jpeg of the optimized network map from the Underhill article on
Y-Chromosome descent that Michal discussed.
Note that it portrays the spread of the Y-Chromosome genetic tree in terms of
regions. The center in theory is where everyone had the same Y-Chromosome.
The MAIN branches reflect different lines of early mutations supposedly
locatable in different regions. Side branches reflect split-offs to other
regions. Note that the descent shown here is entirely male and that the
sampling is based entirely on MODERN populations.
To apply your favorite early language theory to this map, simply substitute
the pre-proto languages of choice for the various locations. Remember dead
center is Adam and whatever language he spoke. And remember that, for
example, where it says "Pakistan-India", you can put down "Dravidian-Elamite"
or "Indo-Altaician" but not both. Or I guess you can put both, but then you
should write "Dravidian-Elamite-Indo-Altaician." I suppose.
If this seems out of whack, you may not want to correlate your theory with
Y-Chromosomes.
