It could easily be either, but as there are many other Slavic compounds with *soN-, the assumption of an Iranian model is not really necessary. Thank you for this example -- I've been trying to find a parallel formation like this in Slavic. It seems to describe the upper Dnieper system very aptly, with its impressive fan of several large tributaries.
