In addition to the postings by David and Piotr, we can add further evidence,
namely that:
(1) the combination a + i is always spelt "e" in Sanskrit, and a + u is
spelled "o".
(2) the only source of the Sanksrit "e" is the combination a + i, and the
only source of "o" is a + u.
(3) the long diphthongs a:i and a:u (with special signs in Sanskrit) arise
not only from a: + i or u, but also from short a + e, or short a + o, whcih
shows that the e (or o) is here merely a sign for ai (or au).

e.g.: yata indriya > yatendriya subdued sense
vigata iccha: > vigateccha vanished desire
-ca eva > -ca:iva and indeed
a:tma: eva > a:tma:iva by the self alone.
