Actually, it must have been *sIlINz^-Isk- 'Silesia' > Polish *sle,z^sk > S'la,sk etc. to begin with (here the _automatic_ regressive palatalisation before the morpheme *-Isk- "bleeds" the progressive.

This is usually blamed on the back *y.
