<kunigas> may be a Middle High German borrowing, as Sergei himself pointed out. The Slavic word (*kUne,dzI < *kUnINgU) is no doubt old and directly reflects Germanic *kuningaz. It shows the second nasal and the progressive palatalisation of *g. Polish ksia,dz shows the expected development of earlier *kne,dz < *kUne,dzI.
