Subject: Re: [tied] Satem

Sergei Tarasovas and I discussed the position of Slavic some time ago and more or less concluded that, technically speaking, Slavic is a highly innovative and therefore somewhat aberrant-looking subbranch of Baltic (or even West Baltic, to be precise, which would mean that reconstructible Proto-Baltic = Proto-Balto-Slavic).

On the other hand, considering Slavic *beretI 'he takes' < PIE *bHereti and Lith. be~ria 'he sacks/they sack' < *bHer-j-o/e (?) < ? one can't help thinking unmarked third person is even a more radical (structural) innovation than some of the Slavic ones. (Some Balto-centric scholars even find it impossible to accept that and declare this to be a deep archaism).
