In response to those who wish that this kind of discussion would just
go away, I would like to express my appreciation for those of you who
have taken the time to give an in-depth refutation to Misra.
Like myself, most of the members of these internet groups lurk
quietly in the background hoping to learn more about the subjects
being discussed by the experts. When a controversial idea is dimissed
out of hand, it actually gives it longer life among those who are not
fully conversant with its weaknesses. When it is something that is
crucial to the rapidly evolving self-concept of the vast population
of India, it is especially worthwhile clarifying any
misunderstandings.
Besides, I have found that regardless of the validity of the idea
being discussed, the discussion itself always teaches me a great deal
about linguistics (or whatever.)
My thanks for the illuminating responses to one of the most
controversial questions in linguistics today (at least among us
laymen.)
