I think it's quite possible. The hypothetical non-lambdaic dialect must also be assumed to have had Persian-style umlaut (vowel breaking with later diphthongisation: *ary- > *airy- > *e:r-
> *ir-).

Could the "Iron" name of the Ossetians then come from a non-
lambdacizing dialect within the Alanic confederation, and
"Ælon" from a lambdicizing one?
