*****GK: While waiting for our linguists./// Your
comment about Ossetic URS can be linked to steppe
practices as to "direction by colour". "White"= the
western orientation. Like the "White" Croats of
Constantine Porphyrogenitus and Sylvester of Kyiv. In
both cases we have to do with the westernmost carriers
of the name. So if AORSI meant the "Whites" in steppe
Iranic, this would point to the groups west of the
main body of the Alan tribes. Perhaps the name went
out of use because at some point the central Alan
tribes overtook these "Aorsi" and in fact found
themselves in an even more westerly location (like in
77 AD acc. to Pliny). At that point the old Aorsi
either became Alans (if they weren't before) or fell
back on their proper tribal names. As to "As"
(perthaps I should say with respect to the "As")
another query for our linguists. Any possible relation
to the old term "Isse-dones"?****
