An improvement on the phonological developments, which also explains
the existence of animate i/n stems such as *potis, *potn-, would be:

1. Before Nullstufe and the loss of short *i, we have the
**Qa:st-ink-0 "bone", **pa:t-in-s "lord".
2. Before a fricative, short *i nasalizes (**Qa:sti~h2, **pa:ti~s)
3. Because -ih2 (feminine marker) is an inappropriate ending for a
neuter, metathesis occurs: **Qosth2i~, **poti~s
4. Nasalization is lost (but the long nasal vowel is not eliminated by
Nullstufe), resulting in *QostHi (*QostHei-), *potis, with oblique
roots *Qostn-, *potn-.
