Today's NY Times (registration required) has a story about what it
calls "Vozrozhdeniye, or Renaissance" Island in the Aral Sea.

This the the former USSR's dumping ground for biological agents. The
US is going to clean it up.
Anyway. I know the Aral has been shrinking, and that this island has
consequently been expanding. But how old is this island? Has it always
been there? I doubt if there is anything left there of archaeological
interest, but I wonder if anything was ever found there.
For what reason is it called 'Renaissance Island'?
