I have been noticing this type of disturbing trend towards ignorant,
self-indulgant theorizing quite a lot recently, on several different
newsgroups - I don't know if this is simply a symptom of more people
having access to the web (thus, you are more likely to have non-
specialist/average joe types surfing around), or whether there is
some type of pervasive dumbing-down of the world population, with
some type of backlash against academia. Perhaps a bit of both. It
certainly is scary that people would rather speculate endlessly on
their own fantasy notions of history than actually go out and learn
first what the professionals have to say on the matter. It's fine to
want to shake up the status quo - but there's an old maxim: you gotta
know the rules first if you want to break them.
