Many people access this list in no-email mode and read the messages
from its archives. In those archives all email addresses are
truncated after the first letter after the @ and are pointers to
something at Yahoo which will pass your message on. That is to stop
spammers from collecting email addresses. That creates a problem in
these two cases:-
(1) Where you do want to quote an email address. In that case,
putting a space on each side of the @ should stop Yahoo from mangling
the email address in its archives.
(2) Any text string containing an @ is treated as an email address in
this same way, e.g. when linguists use @ as the schwa (= neutral
vowel) character.
