The Sumerians say they 'came from the water' or something like that,
don't they.
My own feeling is the ancestors of the Sumerians really did come from
the water, refugees from sea-level rising, from further down in now
indudated portions the Persian Gulf.
World-wide sea level was actually 5 meters higher than present for a
few hundred years before 3200 BCE. Before that, of course, it was a
continuous rise from the end of the last ice age (I've posted the
source for this before, from the article in JIES, as well as other
stuff). The remains of the very earliest 'civilizations', specifically
the ancestors of Egypt and Sumer, are likely inundated, and thus,
closed to us.
