The parallels between the pas'upati seal of the Sarasvati Sindhu
Valley Civilization and the Gundestrup cauldron [found in a bog] have
been presented on the IC list.
I would add that Russian, 'bog' is a derivative from the substratum,
bon:ga of Bha_rata and bhaga (Vedic).
bon:ga = the name given by Santals to the spirits whom they worship,
a demon; to sacrifice to a 'bon:ga'.
bon:ga = a lunar month, a month (Santali)
bon:ga saranjam, bon:ga soronjan: = the materials of sacrifice and
offerings; bon:ga sobok = a disease which affects cattle.
(Santali.lex.)
That Santali attests the semant. of bon:ga as a lunar month apart
from a demon is concordant with the semantics of 'bhaga' in Sanskrit
given below:
bhaga = m. (ifc. f. %{A} and %{I} g. %{bahv-Adi}) `" dispenser "' ,
gracious lord , patron (applied to gods , esp. to Savitr2i) RV. AV. ;
N. of an A1ditya (bestowing wealth and presiding over love and
marriage , brother of the Dawn , regent of the Nakshatra Uttara-
Phalguni1 ; Ya1ska enumerates him among the divinities of the highest
sphere ; according to a later legend his eyes were destroyed by
Rudra) ib. &c. &c. [743,3] ; the Nakshatra UñUttara-PhñPhalguni1 MBh.
vi , 81 ; the sun ib. iii , 146 ; the moon L. ; N. of a Rudra MBh. ;
good fortune , happiness , welfare , prosperity RV. AV. Br. Ya1jn5.
