Well, the main sources were the books of L. Schwennhagen, an Austrian who
lived in Brazil, and wanted to prove that Phenicians settled in Brazil.
According to him, the Phoenicians called themselves "Karu People". He wanted
to prove that the defeated people of Trojan war fled to South America. These
theories became so popular in Rio de Janeiro : the Pedra da Gavea, a great
mount in Rio has a peak superficially similar to a bearded head, it's said
there are Phenician letters graved in it, and secret tunnels.
The city of Tutoia in Northern Brazil was etymologized by him as
"Tur-Troia", and he relates Tupian oca "house" to Greek "oikos", Tupian poti
"river" to Greek potamos .As you can see, just sure etymologies. But I like
to confront these odd theories with the current knowledge.
Other base for Schwennhagen's theories was the Amerindian tales of bearded
cultural heroes, like Tupian Sumé (whom the jesuites identified to Sao Tomé
[Saint Thomas]), Aztec Quetzalcoatl and Mayan Kukulkan.
