Origin of the word "cat"

I don't remember if this has been asked already, but where does English "cat",
German _Katze_, French _chat_, Spanish _gato_, Russian _kos^ka_ (dim. of _kot_),
Modern Greek _gata_, Arabic _qiTTa_ etc. come from? Is it a pre-IE word of
European or Near Eastern origin, or a regional IE word?
