No, the puma is a rather distant relative of the genus _Panthera_, which groups lions, leopards, tigers and jaguars. Surprisingly enough, the most recent research shows that the puma and the cheetah are more closely related to each other than they are to other cats.

By my understanding, the N.Am mountain lion/cougar/puma is a true
lion, albeit one not forming social prides like the Old World varity.
