The Russian linguist Igor M. Diakonoff (the name is also transliterated as Diakonov or D'jakonov) died in 1999. His speciality was Afroasiatic linguistics and the ancient languages of the Middle East. He was also interested in the IE origins problem (he opted for a Balkan homeland), ancient language contacts and long-range comparison. In collaboration with Starostin he worked on Hurro-Urartian/NE Caucasian genetic connections and shortly before his death attempted to demonstrate that Sumerian was genetically related to the Munda languages.
