There´s your verb root (ON snúa).

And I wasn't thinking of just creepy-crawliness, but something more
destructive.

I favor the opinion that the "eel"-word derives from an IE *a:/al-, which is analyzable into *a:-, 'water'+ *le/o-, 'worm'.
