What about the ampersand? *p&te:r looks acceptable to me, and so do combinations like &2.

In the archive, if any letter string includes the @ character, Yahoo's
archiver treats it as an email address and displays it truncated with
a clickable leading to the full version, so that spammers can't
collect lists of email addresses. We need some other symbol than @ to
represent the schwa vowel and laryngeals and suchlike. I feel that
this information should be put in this list's FAQ.
