It was 1938 and some German publisher wanted to bring out a translation
of The Hobbit. In his response Tolkien went on to say that, as far as
he knew, he had no Gypsy ancestors:-) It's all in the Letters of JRR
Tolkien. Actually, he wrote two responses and the letter in the book is
the one that was not sent. There's apparently no record of the other,
so it's impossible to say how much of the Professor's considerable
disdain was in fact transmitted.
