P CORNELI TACITI DE ORIGINE ET SITV GERMANORVM

[Chapter 37]
Eundem Germaniae sinum proximi Oceano Cimbri tenent, parva nunc
civitas, sed gloria ingens. Veterisque famae lata vestigia manent,
utraque ripa castra ac spatia, quorum ambitu nunc quoque metiaris
molem manusque gentis et tam magni exitus fidem.

Rendering
Near [the] ocean reside [the] Cimbri, in [the] same curved bay of
Germaniae, now [a] small community, yet vast [in past] glory. In
saying no, tradition's vestige holds permanency, for over a wide
space in this far place, embanked encampments, now measured heaps
disserted by this historic race, are [so] broadly abandoned yet with
honor.

Traditional Rendering
In the same winding tract of Germany live the Cimbrians, close to the
ocean; a community now very small, but great in fame. Nay, of their
ancient renown, many and extensive are the traces and monuments still
remaining; even their entrenchments upon either shore, so vast in
compass that from thence you may even now measure the greatness and
numerous bands of that people, and assent to the account of an army
so mighty.

[Chapter 45]
Ergo iam dextro Suebici maris litore Aestiorum gentes adluuntur,
quibus ritus habitusque Sueborum, lingua Britannicae propior. Matrem
deum venerantur. Insigne superstitionis formas aprorum gestant: id
pro armis omniumque tutela securum deae cultorem etiam inter hostis
praestat. Rarus ferri, frequens fustium usus. Frumenta ceterosque
fructus patientius quam pro solita Germanorum inertia laborant.

Rendering
Therefor besides [the] Suebici seashore [the] Aestiorum nation bathe,
who's manner [and] expression [is] like Sueborum, [yet their]
language is closest [to] Britannicae. [The] Forest Mother deity
[they] venerate, [and] bear [her] superstitious emblem [as the] form
[of a] boar: this instead of shields [are used to] protect actually
better among [the] enemy [and] secure everyone faithful [to the]
goddess. [They have] little iron, numerous staffs, [and] patiently
make use of grains [and] other crops instead of how Germanorum [has]
become accustomed to unskilled labor.

Traditional Rendering
Upon the right of the Suevian Sea the Aestyan nations reside, who use
the same customs and attire with the Suevians; their language more
resembles that of Britain. They worship the Mother of the Gods. As
the characteristic of their national superstition, they wear the
images of wild boars. This alone serves them for arms, this is the
safeguard of all, and by this every worshipper of the Goddess is
secured even amidst his foes. Rare amongst them is the use of weapons
of iron, but frequent that of clubs. In producing of grain and the
other fruits of the earth, they labor with more assiduity and
patience than is suitable to the usual laziness of Germans

Note: You may find that the Cimbri had a long reputation of sea born
piracy that preceded the folk movement of the late 1st century BC.
Herein may lay the origin of forms of Cimbri in Gaelic and Gallic,
meaning theft, plunder, and slaving.

[In] the Gallic language, [the] Cimbri [are] declared bandits.
