The German word for the lead compound the Romans used for sweetening
wine was Blei-zucker 'lead sugar'. I think, but am not sure, that it
was lead acetate. Checking up on <sapa> on the net, I found that it
is according to those sources wine boiled to a thick substance,
possibly in lead containers.
