I saw a theory that some IE -om 2nd declension neuters such as {yugo-
m} = "yoke" were originally transferred from the 3rd declension and
the -om- was once part of the stem. The transfer came because the -om
ending sounded like 2nd declension acc.sg. From that started a habit
of using -om as a neuter thematic declension ending.
