From my point of view (and I think, that of the the Slavicists on this
list), February 14 is best remembered as the feast day of Sts. Cyril and
Methodius.

Cyril, a.k.a. Constantine, is said to be the creator of both the Glagolithic
and Cyrillic letters. Methodius is said to have translated the Old Church
Slavonic version of the Bible. In Catholic terms, they are co-patron-saints
of Europe and of Christian Unity. In purely secular terms, and in explicity
Indo-European terms, they stand at the head of Slavic literature and Slavic
philology.
