The -ar(i) suffix in Slavic words is usually assumed to be of Gothic origin (etymologically = English -er), though *-i-nU is a Slavic extension. It may be a case of Celtic influence on Slavic, mediated by East Germanic peoples, though of course a native base for *boj-ar- exists (Slavic *bojI 'battle, fighting' from *bi-ti 'beat'). The Boii's association with what are now Slavic lands is clear in the case of Bohemia, named after them.

And Common Slavic *bojarinU:*bol'arinU 'noble'< *baija-ri:k- ?
