A good point; I didn't think of ade:n. Plus, Latin re:n- 'kidney' may be from metathesised *negWH-r-o- > *regWH-n-o- > *re:no- converted into a consonantal stem by nalogy to lie:n 'spleen', which also accounts for the variant rie:n (Anttila 1972). Yes, it seems there are good arguments for divorcing *ngWen- 'gland, (swelling in the) groin' from *negWHr- 'kidney'.
