Whatever "mainstream IE opinion" means, the semantic and phonological
link between these three roots is something that is invariably pointed
out by all serious works I have seen. Opinions differ on how to
explain it. Baltic has all three forms: Latv. jemt, n'emt, nemt;
Lith. imti "to take".

Apparently, you don't know much about the "competent literature". The
PIE forms are *su(:)nus [with short /u/ in Gmc. *sunus] and *su(:)ius.
[the /u/ is short in Grk. huiús, and was replaced by /o/ in
Tocharian].
