I propose that some PIE diphthongs were smoothed when
followed by laryngeals in preconsonantal and final positions
(not prevocalically, when the laryngeal becomes
heterosyllabic). A full justification would be impossible
here, but is laid out in my article "Strange ablauts and
neglected sound changes in PIE", Indogermanische Forschungen
103 (1998), 70-92.
*eih1 > *e:h1 > *e:
*eiX > *i:X > *i:
*oiX > *o:X > *o:
where X = h2/3 (no matter if the two are distinct phonemes
or not).
*we: is not analysed in the article, but it occurred to me
just now that it could be the dual *wei-h1 corresponding to
the plural *wei-es and following my monophthongisation
pattern.
