Adamant- is usually analysed as 'unbreakable, unconquerable' from dama- < *dmH- 'tame, subdue', though this may be a folk etymology. Khalub- commemorates the iron-working Chalybians (Khalubes) of Pontus (in N Anatolia), mentioned in Herodotus' History and in the Argonaut saga.
