I don't think the Egyptians did. I suspect it the errors were made
in one Egyptian's misreading of dates (or maybe Solon's
understanding) confabulated by the "Chinese whispers" effect when the
stories were passed down through Plato's family.

Thus the Efyptian may have said to Solon that "the People of the Sea
came from beyond Keftiu 900 years ago", or in other words "the
Atlantoi came from beyond the Pillar 9000 years ago". It is easy how
the error came in. Also the Egyptians called the Mediterranean "The
Great Green" and believed it to be part of the world Ocean that
encircled the Earth. To the Greeks, they realised that the
Mediterranean was a landlocked Sea, and that Oceanus encircled the
Earth beyond the Pillars of Hercules.
