I finally discovered the correct etymology of sabha:. It
derives from IE *s(w)ebH-, present also in English sib,
sibling and gossip (< OE god-sibb 'godparent') and related
to the reflexive pronoun *swe. The original meaning must
have been 'a village community' i.e. 'our people'.
