Oh yes, such people did guard the gates of linguistic periodicals. They certainly knew their Latin and Greek at the very least, and no author would have been allowed to smuggle in barbarous blunders like the following (cited by Szemerényi in the same article, with references):universalium (sg. of universalia);verbum simplicium (sg. of simplicia);(St. Thomas) Aquinâtus;tempus mirabilis (modelled on annus mirabilis).
