A reader-friendly translator who wants to render "everyday Dutch" as everyday English would avoid stilted subjunctive constructions altogether. "We wish the English translation to preserve this character ..." The simpler the better.

You are correct, Dennis, on the use of "to be" in your instant example:  "it
was intended that this character "be" preserved............"  I'm interested
in this conversation concerning translations.......................
