The identiy of the river Eridanos is uncertain. In view of the similarity to the names of the Rhone (o circumflexed replacing the consonnant next to it), it is probably to this river that the name applies: Italien Rodano, Rheto-Romansh Rodan; today is still called Rotten in Oberwallis. Thus he accent falls on rod and the division of the name in Eri-danus is erroneous and unsubstantiated. To my knowledge, the root r-d is found in no other European river and remains unelucidated.
