I would like to ask people their opinion on
the reconstruction of the obstruent series in IE. The traditionnal theory reconstructs
three series of obstruents, D DH T.
voiced - voiced aspirated - unvoiced
The glottalic theory also reconstructs only 3 series, but differently : T' D(h) T(h)
glottalized - voiced - unvoiced
It accounts for the absence of *b in PIE as reconstructed with the traditionnal model, which seems typologically unusual.
Other theories have been proposed : Szeremenyi advocates four seires of obstruents, Starostin three series (unvoiced, voiced, aspirated).
Tell us what is your favorite. You just have a unique choice.
