I remember when studying English and American literature we were taught that
not only food and cooking items (as mentioned by John) but also furniture
mostly got their names from French - which was the official language in
England until the 19th century, if I remember correctly (please correct me
if I'm wrong!). The only original (Germanic, I suppose, cf. German 'Stuhl'
for 'chair' - from French 'chaise') 'English' piece of furniture remained
one no noble person probably ever used:
the stool.
