I need a Classical Greek (or better yet Homeric, if anyone can do it) translation of the phrase: "God gave teeth; God will give bread." Can anyone help me with that? E-mail would be fine. Yours, S.M. Stirling
Here's my suggestion:Ho theos edo:ken odontas, ho theos do:sei artou.Homer would not have used any articles, perhaps omitting the augment in edo:ke as well and performing some other tricks in order to mould the sentence into a perfect hexametric line, e.g.:
Ho:s theos do:ken odontas, do:sei de: theos artou.[o: = omega, e: = eta, accent diacritics ignored]I hope Sabine or some other accomplished Classic scholar corrects my self-taught Greek if there's anything wrong with it.My best regards,Piotr
