Dear Piotr, I love words and relish in their ways. One of my joys is puns.
I've earnt my living from words, as do you. It's quite possible I mistook
whoever wrote loon and kook for you. It's just too trivial to go read the
archive. Still don't appreciate the soapbox as not an example of it being
impersonal. Had it been jargon, the convention has it to be neutral. Nor do
I find it believable that adults, wordsmiths, scholars, etymologists get
worked up to a point of tension. I don't have a philosophy, but several
theories. I've got nothing personal either for or against you. To repeat
again What it said at Linguist misled me. So I put up a piece of what I call
fishbait to see whether there might be some folk who might be interested in
mine, no offense meant. It seems there aren't. Ok, fine too. I got what I
interpret as an over-reaction by people, had it been done to me, I would
ignore. I'm well enough aware what university staffrooms deploy as labels
for the disapproved, not suitable on an open forum. Besides you would know
all too well there's kinds and kinds of linguistics. If I led you to use
soapbox I can only laugh at a miscategorisation. I've done more than enough
public speaking, lecturing and teaching in my life to have no need for the
missionaristic. The uses of standard academic jargon, the impersonal is not
exacly endearing, is it?
Adrian.
