To Piotyr and Mark,
I have followed your discussions on Cybalist for some time and most of
the time I have not commented because I felt that I simply didn't have
the expertise to do so. I still don't have it; however, a basic thought
comes to mind. If two neighbors choose to think they are speaking the
"same" language then they will. And likewise the converse: that if
they dislike each other they will speak in their "private" language so
that the OTHER cannot understand. This is perhaps the main reason why
placing a structure on languge is so very difficult.

You ask whether Greek and Armenian belong to the same language family.
Some folks will say yes and others will reply in the negative. Still
another group will unite them under the category IndoEuropean. And if
that causes political controversy, then others will place them in PIE.

Valery Alekseev placed Greek and Albanian as subunits of IndoEuropean.
Do either of you have a problem with that designation?

Sincerely,
Gerry
