Question 1: There is no relation between individual letters and meaning.

Question 2: Here in the West, very little information about
Arabic/Persian/Islamic typography is available. But computer graphics
have greatly influenced Islamic lettering (calligraphy that is not
_written_ with a pen).

Question 3: I have seen Persian books on the history of the alphabet
even in American university libraries, so you do have something to start
with!

Do you have the Encyclopaedia Britannica? A paper copy in a library
would be better, but the DVD-ROM version has the text, but not all the
illustrations, and its articles are quite good. There is also an online
version that you can subscribe to.
