Try switching the encoding to UTF-8! They weren't trashed for me, but
my setting had stuck in UTF-8 when I looked at the message in the
archives - http://groups.yahoo.com/group/qalam/message/5891 . If you
haven't deleted it, Jelk Cabaniss's message should still be on your
system.

I've trimmed the list, as I'm posting from the list web pages and
Yahoo's removal of 'smart quotes' corrupts 6% of UTF-8 continuation
bytes. It's a shame they don't cave in and simply label the postings
as windows-1252.

7 of the 10 specimen letters above were still correct when I sent this
reply using UTF-8 (only for it to be interpreted as windows-1252 and
converted to ISO-8859-1).
