Reminds me of a comment about Japanese businesses, perhaps still true --
that people who were able to write attractively and well were/are valued
by business, probably in particular for communications outside the
company. I have little doubt that the significant technical development of
facsimile ("fax") was driven by the desire to transmit (good-looking)
handwritten documents.
