I always pronounce it /gQdzIl@/ (which also doesn't
quite rhyme). I've heard it with /@U/ but that
sounds/feels to affected for me to use.

Me too.

I've read that it "should" be pronounced /pIN/. I nod
my head and say, "hmm, that's nice," and go on
pronouncing it /pi: en dZi:/.

I guess I have natural aversions to both prescribed
pronunciations and to pronuncing initialisms as words.
