I don't know what _his_ reasons were (probably include sorting, since
that was always important to him), but my reasons include that when you
have a floating diacritic of a certain width, it looks better over
letters of differing widths if it's approaching them from the left; and
that (since they're often in font assignment spots that Macs don't
recognize as letters for double-clicking on words) it's easier to be
certain of including them in a word chosen for italicizing.

(In FrameMaker you can assign a different sort order to every index, so
it doesn't matter to me how the script sorts out-of-the-box.)
