I think it's good to know why people do things that seem, well, peculiar;
helps calm the waters.

It seems that one can trust the readers' memories of a given message to
last a few days, so that a few lines as a hint could suffice to help
recall the rest that's not quoted. It's a different story if one were to
start replying to, say, month-old messages (as I might be doing, in other
lists!)
