I've done a little bitmapped-font design, at the hobbyist level, and I
well understand how difficult it can be. True Type hinting is a rather
awe-inspiring process. Btw, T.T. hinting is done by a very-specialized
computer language, no less. Whether it's interpreted or compiled, I don't
know. Although "hint" implies voluntary acceptance or rejection, there is
no such aspect to it. Hinting is a defined procedure that depends upon
information about glyph shapes.
