I remember one message on a mailing list (I would guess Unicode) from a
Swede who spoke fluent French (and German) who found one gas station
attendent in France who would only speak to him in English (not very
fluent English.) At the end of the exchange, the attendent apologized
for his poor English, saying that his German was much better.
