But the only non-Latin character set used on that list was Japanese! I
understand that Qalam is to talk about any script. So future discussions may
need to show examples in Ge'ez, Cyrillic, Klingon, or whatever.

The problem with using UTF-8 in the message body is that the header gets
mangled to (Base-64 encoded, to be more precise), even if it only contains
ASCII data.

I am not a specialist of MIME, but I understand that the problem is when
Microsoft Outlook e-mails talk with Unix-box e-mails. I am not sure as to
which side is the guilty one.

However, I will not annoy people with UTF-8 messages for quite a long while
now... As you can read in my signature, I am changing my e-mail (and job),
and my new web-based e-mail doesn't allow me to set the encoding.
